sam, what he may have meant to say, without voiceing
it correctly, is the buddha's teaching of not holding
things dear to oneself. This does not mean that
there is no love, it only means that one understands
the impermanance of all things and does not become
distraught with the loss of things, because that is
the natural cycle. He may mean he wants to love you
but feel that he does not need to make you into and
idea of "foreverness," feeling bad when you will one
day leave.
