I've always thought of Buddhism as a pragmatic religion. There is no action that is by its very nature right or wrong. It depends what the circumstances are. I drink when I go out with my friends because the evening gets dull very quickly if I'm the only sober one there. I drink in moderation though and believe it's OK as I wouldn't enjoy myself as much if I didn't drink. And what's wrong with enjoying yourslef so long as it causes no harm to others or yourself? I know many Buddhists who hold the same view on alcohol.
Hope this helps,
