I just wanted to post this quick message to get something off my chest. I live in a rural community where there is no Buddhists except myself, thus no teacher, no sanghas, etc. I must practice alone, with only my books, meditation, and pure heart to guide me. My day revolves around practicing loving kindness and compassion to everyone I meet. I meditate daily, email buddhist friends, and read books on buddhism whenever I can. I truly believe that it is my intentions and attitude that make me a Buddhist. A teacher or sangha may help guide me along my path, but when I die and are reborn, I have no one again, and start over. All I have is my karma. I recently read a post on here where someone told another person who was teacher-less to MOVE to another city, country if he/she had to, in order to find a teacher. Get real! We are not all nomads with no responsibilites. I have a family here, a baby to take care of, and have no intentions of running off to find a teacher. Yes, Buddha left his wife and child to search, but he had someone to take care of them, and they had money. And lets keep in mind the Buddha, the Ultimate Teacher, traveled alone, and became enlightened long before you knew ANYTHING... there are many Buddhists out there that get mighty tired of people telling us we're not Buddhists because we don't have a teacher, sangha, or have had ceremonies with monks making vows. We say our vows, and practice, and read, and meditate, and carry Buddhism in our hearts where ever we go. Now will someone tell me, why are we considered "not really buddhists"...is this really fair? Anyone? I'd appreciate your insights. And any of you "not really buddhists" out there, feel free to email me and chat. We are all part of a Universal Sangha.
