Pete,
Sorry you want a perspective without the "bad karma"
reasoning, but that is a Buddhist perspective, like it or not.
If you've study the Buddha and Buddhism, there is no mental explanation
separate from the physical. In a non-dualistic world where mind affects
body and and vice-versa, how can there be any other solution?
I feel, personally, that we sometimes look for a "clinical" or "proven"
reason why things are the way they are. Let's look inside of ourselves, instead
of through a laboratory or book. At times, these areas of searching are based on mental
interpretation, aka delusion. That's my thought, anyone else?

Peace to you always Pete, Stephen Pema Dorje
