I think that Shakyamuni Buddhas role (or reason for being here) was to provide us with an example of what is possible as a human being. Shakyamuni Buddha showed us the path, by which a being bound in samsara is capable of reaching buddhahood, and thereby end suffering, by their own actions. This example serves to change buddhism from a dry intellectual subject (like pure physics) to something within the realms of human possibility (sort of like catching the apple as it falls).
Hope this helps!
