I can't suggest to you how you should approach this situation, but I can tell you about how I deal with it. In my case I generally remind myself of the fact that everyone has different opinions and ideas about the way the world works. If I am discussing the nature of reality with someone who is bias against eastern philosophies then I mention western philosophers such as Rene Descartes. His statement 'I think therefore I am' is virtually the same as Lord Buddhas teachings on emptiness.
Anyhow I think that the trick is to see that there is no true "reality" the essence of emptiness is that nothing exsists from its own side, but only exsists because we imagine it exsists. Therefore when people attempt to challenge your viewpoint, embrace them, for they have given you an opportunity to see just how convincing the non-exsistent world can be, and an opportunity to remind you to consider emptiness.
P.S. I once came across a wonderful saying (I'm not sure who to attribute it to) which states "A man who's mind is changed by force is of the same mind still!"
