There are many types of meditation retreats. Some short, some long, some sit a lot or for long periods, some don't sit as much or for shorter periods, some are very strict, some are very lax, some focus on one type of meditation, others allow individuals to use one of a number of methods...

It really depends on what you have available to you. The Center I go on retreat with holds everything from half day, 1 day, 2 day, 7 day, and will soon offer a 49 day period. We usually sit a required total of 8 hours a day in 30-40 minute periods. There are also chores, meals, Dharma talks, a bit of rest if needed and of course some sleep at night. It is suggested that people who want to attend the 7 day retreat either have tried the shorter "retreats" or at least sit regularly at home.

I'd suggest visiting places close to you and see what they have to offer and also to see if you feel comfortable there. If you're willing or able to travel you're options are broader. I fly from CA to NY for retreat every year (I'd go twice a year if my work schedule permitted).

Are there Centers close to you?
