even religions which have a god dont see it as simply as a creator which exists separately from its creation. if your friends have a religion they should read some of the more complex ideas about the nature of god written by mystics or theologians. they may find that the word god has been too misused and misunderstood to adequately represent their own religion's belief. when you remove the word 'god' from your mind, it is much easier to see why buddhism has no deity. how did we get here? you should as well ask them for an answer which does not stem from simplified dogma. these questions are mysteries which cannot be understood by us, and would do little to help us if we did. saying 'yes there is a god who created us in his image' only creates false notions of reality.
