Grace,
Good question.. I'll give you my own personal thoughts.
I believe what a book says. The term or belief in "God" is humans way
of creating a protection for themselves. A belief in God judging us and
if we are good, we will go to heaven for eternity.
This way of thinking protects ourselves from the "hells". Also in accordance with this, we've created the
idea od a soul, that is separate from us, and that transmigrates to heaven, to be judged by God. In this way we
still "continue" after death, and are "protected" by God. Self-preservation and self-protection, I believe, are the reasons these concepts
arose. The problem I have with this that it all
talks of things separate. God, separate from us, a soul, separate
from us. I believe that all of us are interconnected. The true nature
within us is what continues beyond death, to be re-born. I'm not going to go into it any farther
right now, because that brings karma and dependent origination into it.
In summary, if we practice compassion, do no harm, and follow the Buddha's teaching,
if there is a God, he/she would be smiling. If not, good re-birth.
As far as where we came from, why worry about it?
We can't do anything about it. What we can do is practice NOW, thus affecting tomorrow.
I know this is lengthy, sorry. These are my thoughts.

Take care Grace, Stephen
