No sexism in Buddhism. Just as you suspected, monk is just a male left-home disciple and a nun is just a female left-homer disciple. Both have equal status.

An organiztion you may be interested in is the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu-Chi Foundation. It is an organization started and lead by a most venerable and greatly compassionate Buddhist nun from Taiwan. The organization is mainly in Taiwan and many parts of California, but just to know about it can be very inspiring. They do very wonderful service work. If you're intersted, take a look...
