Certainly, book-knowledge is fine for leading the way, but only hands on practice and experimentation will get you there. I use the stomach method because I have lot's of trouble with feeling the nostrals. What you do with the stomach is cincentrate on the point below the navel, this is a smaller area for most, but I don't know your stomach size:) As you stated, what works... and the stomach method is the best for me. Just as there's different points in the breath cycle you can count, so to there are different places on the body to feel them. And smokeing is fine if that's your thing, I've just never heard of it until now. I should also say, the meditation techniques I base my meditation is of Zen (all this is called zazen in Zen). Mainly because Zen is so centered on zazen and their techniques are well outlined, and work well for me. Well, goodday and take care of your nose:) Metta.
