According to Buddhist teaching, dreams can be caused by:
1. Our mind "sticks" to the object that we done or talked before sleeping. For example if we talked about haunted house, we can have a dream about haunted house
2. Our desire, that not yet realized. Example we desire to eat nice food, but not yet realized, we can have a dream about such food.
3. Dreams that caused by disturbed body's condition.
4. Dreams that sent by gods, deities, (or spiritual teachers that allready reached realization).
The very special case in Buddhism, about dream is the dream of Queen Maya (The Mother of the Honored One), who dreamed a White Elephant, entering her womb.
This explanation partly taken from the Venerable Master Uttamo Thera in Indonesian (http://geocities.com/bbcid.geo/index2.html)
May this can help. Please forgive and correct me if I make mistake.
