Yes, his most accomplished students, especially Ananda his cousin who rembered most techings because he was there for most. He and 500 monks ot together to recount the techings and commit them to memory, this happened shrotly after the Buddhas death. It wasn't until hundreds of years after that they were written down, however up till that point they, the monks, would gather to recite the sutta canon thus meaning most everything is accuerate to some degree. As acurate as the original monks remebered, but since humndreds of monks had helped to sort the suttas, it's safe to say even that the suttas were pretty accurate. Hope that helps, Metta.
