Legend has it that the sutras were written down immediately after the Buddha's death. Historically, this is doubtful. The first sutras we can date were written hundreds of years after the Buddha died. Given that the culture in those times favored oral tradition over written, it wouldn't surprise anyone that a long period passed before the sutras were committed to the written page.

Ironically, it may have been over interpretations of sutras that the first angry schism occurred in Buddhism, which split the early sangha and resulted in the formation of different schools.
