I second your insight, Michael.
I always feel that kill requires the motive of anger or hate.
Eating has both as objective and result the element of delight and pleasure.
It is the anger or hate that does harm to one's "soul" (I can't think of a better word right now so please let me borrow the term but minus the connotation), not the death of the animal. When we eat something that is already dead, we can't kill it again by eating it. Therefore, hate cannot arise when eating meat.
