The precepts actually say "intoxicants". You can't practice adequately if you can't focus on the job at hand.
Buddhism has long recognized that there are lifesaving drugs that are perfectly acceptable.
Remember that Buddhism has no really hard and fast rules. All the precepts are designed, not to be a cage, but to be a shield for the practitioner. You can't lose your "spirituality". You CAN have your practice messed up, but that's all. You are who you are, and your original face is the same regardless of what you put in your mouth.
