The Abhidhamma has very detailed explanations of this subject.
There are, as far as I know, two lineages of the Abhidhamma/Abhidharma, one being the Abhidhamma studied by Theravada, another one by the Tibetan school.
There are three books about the Abhidhamma which can be viewed on-line or downloaded from the net. I have listed their URLs (they belong to the Theravada lineage):
The Abhidhamma: A Manual of Abhidhamma (by Nárada Thera, Vájiráráma, Colombo)

Introducing Buddhist Abhidhamma, Meditation and Concentration (by U Kyaw Min, I. C.S.)

The Abhidhamma (by Peter Della Santina)
