Sam,
Don't be so affected by what others do. The causes of delusions can be 1)Things are not what we expect them to be,2)things are what we don't want them be,3) things are what we want them to be but then because of impermanence they change, 4)things are what we don't want them to be and they don't change.(thelast one I'm alittle foggy on). Anyway, sentient beings as I understand are beings that can discriminate. So, yes, un born are sentient beings. As far as the actions of the parent, if you feel you had to say something why didn't you? I personally feel it's not my place to demand that others conform or at least listen to my sense of morality. If the mother was attempting suicide ot beating her child or something like that, that would be direct physical harm. I know, it's a tough call. Do what you feel is best in your heart.

Peace , Stephen
