Just as a note of clarification -- those terrible things you describe, though true, are 1) cultural more than religious practices, 2) exist in very few Muslim nations today, and 3) even in those few nations which do still adhere to the old ways, these traditions are fast on the decline. Also, when you look at the history of Arab peoples, you have to understand how revolutionary and beneficial Islam was. Whatever your views of Muslim treatment of women (and I agree that for the most part they're terribly backward and hurtful), Islam gave women some status in society, at least. Before Muhammed, women were less than property -- they were garbage. Most of the time, if a family had a girl, the infant was taken into the desert and left to die, like taking the trash to the curb. After Muhammed -- who treated his first wife very well -- women were and are allowed to own some property and are even allowed to divorce their husbands, though this is admitedly rare. Yes, Muslim cultures typically have a LONG way to go, but we have to see where they've been and how far they've come so far. Look at Turkey -- they recently had a WOMAN prime minister, which -- even though they are a secular state -- is still a phenomenal event.
Just giving our brothers a little credit.
Peace to all... Sam:)
