:Greetings friends: I second the proposal that the rotund laughing "buddha" is the Chinese bodhisattva Hotei or another one called Budai. These jolly enlightened beings have postponed attainment of Nirvana to bring joy and happiness to their fellow beings. They should NOT be confused with the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, the Supremely Enlightened One (also called the Tathagata, Shakyamuni, etc.) Although strictly related to the Chinese Mahayana Buddhist tradition, I've noticed that some of these jolly chubby hoteis and budais are turning up even in Theravada Buddhist Thailand! Best wishes to all of you! -- Mark Metta Silber of Budd Lake, New Jersey, USA.
