: I own a carved wooden statue of what I was told is the "crying Buddha." Its appearance is very much unlike that of the conventional, large and smiling Buddha. This carving is a well built and muscularly defined man, sitting with his legs outstretched in front of him, hunched over with his face buried in his hands as if he were weeping. I was told upon purchasing the carving that he was weeping for the sins of man. I have since heard other names and theories. Can you help? I feel embarassed and ashamed to own such a spiritual and beautiful work of art and not know its correct origin or symbolism.
: Thank you, Dan Zwolak
