The usual number is 108, Rosie, and the sanskrit name is "mala". But I have seen smaller ones and do not know whether there is any special number for those. As the mala is used for counting repetitions of eg mantras I would think that the smaller ones would be a fraction of the 108 number. Interestingly, the number 108 also has great significance in Chinese tradition, probably because of the Buddhist link. For example, there were 108 heroes in the book "The Water Margin", if I remember rightly.
