: Hello all. I have been studying Buddhism for a little over 2 months now. My control of anger and good will towards others is better than ever. My wife who really has shown no interest in the Dharma herself truly notices and loves the changes. It truly is the path to step on....at least for me.
: My question however deals with the Mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. I still have not been able to find someone with a good explanation of its meaning. Anyone who could share some quality, to the point insight on the importance of this mantra it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and compassion,
: David Carrier
The original mantra was : OM MANE PEME HUNG. But tibetans translated it from sanscrit as OM MANI PADME HUM. So it is tibetanizated. The meaning of this mantra in sanscrit is:
OM: No meaning
HUNG: is in me
The meaning is: The Jewel of the lotus is in me. This is a poetic way to say "I have Buddha Nature". The lotus is the symbol of Buddhism because it's a flower that get born in the mud but never gets dirty. The lotus is the Buddhahood, and it is a jewel. So the deep meaning of the mantra is : "The jewel of Buddhahood is in me, I am a potential Buddha".
I hope it be useful.
