Well...... A man once asked the Buddha if all his present followers would attain enlightment. The Buddha said no. When asked why the Buddha told a story about 2 travelers wanting to get to a certain place. And after asking a nearby villager, managed to get the directions to the place.
One of the travelers followed the instuctions. He turned left when supposed to and turn right when he should turn right. Therefore he got to his destination with no problem. But then other traveler, failed to get to his destination, because he turned right when he was to turn left and turn left when he was supposed to turn right.
If we were to think of the destination as enlightment and the travelers as normal people, we will be able to see that most of the time, it is us, who do not practise the way properly. It is us who sometimes do not understand the teachings. We, sometimes thinking that we know better, intend to go astray and therefore not reaching our destination.
The Buddha can only teach, it is up to us to follow. If we choose not to follow, surely we will never see his teachings.
