I might suggest first of all just trying to still your mind. This can be done through what is called Vipashana meditation and begins by concentration on the breath. The breath is known as the body and mind conditioner and through following the breath, you can calm your body and your mind as well. There are sites on the net which can describe the basics of this type of meditation. I think that this might be beneficial to you in these early stages of your journey.
: I know what I need to start doing but when I try to sit and explore my mind I get restless and it grows into a panic attack.
