: I know what I need to start doing but when I try to sit and explore my mind I get restless and it grows into a panic attack.

sounds like you might be trying too hard when you say 'mind won't examine itself'.
how about just sitting with your eyes open, learning to concentrate on any external object you fancy and relaxing.
panic attacks can need professional psychological help &/or counselling.
the two main approaches in treatment are 1) learning to breathe deeply and easily, especially relaxing the diaphragm, and
2)working out the thoughts that are probably feeding into creating the attack and defusing them, reprogramming your negative thoughts into
ones which give you more permission.
i've also seen your symptoms caused by a person not wanting to face up to some deeply repressed experience or emotion. something which may also need professional help.
love and blessings
carl.
